Who I am

I have stood in the mechanical rooms of houses that cost almost nothing to run.

I am Elias Griffith. Fill in: the trade, the years, and where you worked — the specifics that make this paragraph yours. For generations houses were built to heat, cool and power themselves, with no HVAC and no utility, and most of those methods still work in an ordinary house on an ordinary street.

The bill arrives in kilowatt-hours, so every fix gets sold to you in kilowatt-hours too. But the kilowatt-hour that keeps a room warm and the one that runs a laptop cost the same to buy and nothing like the same to replace.

Water holds more heat per pound than nearly anything you can buy by the gallon, and it does not wear out with cycles. Prices are ranges from ordinary suppliers in 2026, not the cheapest thing on the internet. Every row appears in the books with the full arithmetic, the conditions it needs to be true, and the case where the expensive answer really is the right one.

The last chapter of Book Two

Six words on a box that do not mean what you think.

This is not a scandal I am breaking. It is the ordinary language of the trade, and everyone selling to you knows exactly how it lands.

"Up to"
The best result anyone got, in the best conditions anyone tested. It is a ceiling, and nothing on the box tells you the floor.
"5000 watts"
Usually peak, sometimes for seconds. Continuous output is the number that decides what actually runs, and it is often half.
"13.5 kilowatt-hours"
Electrical storage. The same figure on a thermal store means heat, which is a different job at roughly a tenth of the price.
"Maintenance-free battery"
You cannot top up the cells. It says nothing about how long it lasts, and it often means you cannot revive it either.
"Pays for itself"
At what fuel price, over how many years, at whose install cost. A payback claim without those three numbers is a mood, not a calculation.
"Whole-home backup"
Almost never the whole home. It is the panel it is wired to, and the sizing chapter shows you how to work out which circuits that really is.

A range, not a promise. Your climate, your rate and your house decide where you land inside it, and a house that is already tight will sit at the bottom. Why these are different

The limits are printed in the books.

Anyone can list a hundred energy hacks. These also tell you plainly when a method will not work, so you do not spend money finding out.

A tank of water will not power your house.
It heats and cools it, which is most of the bill. Electricity is Book Two's job, and the two are never mixed up on the page.
"Off the meter" means as close to zero as your roof, your climate and your utility's rules allow.
Book Two shows how far each step gets you and what it costs. Some houses reach zero. Most reach a bill they stop thinking about.
Passive cooling does not fix a humid climate on its own.
The Manual shows exactly where shade, night flushing and mass carry a house, and where you still need real dehumidification and the power to run it.
Free-energy devices are not real.
Nothing in these books makes power out of nothing. Book Two includes how to recognise the pitch, since the same three claims come back every few years under a new name.
A scrap bank is cheap because it is used.
Used lead-acid holds less than the label says, gives off hydrogen on charge, and can start a fire if wired badly. That chapter spends more pages on testing and safety than on building.
Some of this needs a licensed pro, and the books say which parts.
High-current wiring and code-critical plumbing are named where they come up, along with how to keep that bill small.

Before you order

Can I buy The Build Book on its own?

No. It only comes with the set, because every build sheet assumes you have read the sizing and safety chapters in the other two books. Handing out build steps without them is how people get hurt or waste money.

Which book should I start with if I only buy one?

The Home Energy Manual, unless you already have a tight house and are specifically shopping for solar or storage. The Manual is the one that decides whether the money in Book Two is worth spending at all.

Is this the same as the videos?

No. A video is one idea at a time and it stops when the runtime does. The books are the whole thing in order, cross-referenced, so you can open one in the basement and find the answer in a minute. A fair amount has never been on camera because it does not fit in twenty minutes.

Will any of this work in my climate?

Each method says where it fits. Sealing, load shifting and hot-water work pay off almost everywhere. Passive cooling, solar sizing and heat-pump economics change a great deal with latitude and humidity, and the books treat that honestly rather than assuming one typical house.

I rent, or I live in an apartment.

The sealing, load-shifting, standby and hot-water chapters need no structural change and are marked as such. The buried tank, the solar array and the earth tube need a house and land you own.

Do I need to be handy?

Most of it is weekend work explained step by step. Where a job genuinely needs a licensed electrician or plumber, the book names it rather than pretending otherwise, and every build sheet can be handed to a contractor to follow as written.

I am in my sixties or seventies. Can I still do this?

Yes. Nothing here assumes a background, and the highest-return jobs in either book are the cheapest and least physical ones.
